Are you excited about the Dyson Airstrait™, the brand’s latest wet-to-dry straightener? If you are always running late in the mornings and would love a convenient and quick way to dry and straighten your hair and cut out all that frizz, keep reading!
Dyson’s latest innovation, the Dyson Airstrait™ straightener, offers a new way to simultaneously dry and straighten hair – from wet to dry. But it’s unlike any other straightener you have used before. This revolutionary beauty gadget uses air instead of hot blades to straighten out your curl and frizz. It saves you time and the heat damage which comes with traditional hair straighteners.
Dyson’s engineers have thoroughly studied the structure of hair to airflow dynamics whilst understanding thermal, mechanical and chemical damage – and the effects on hair health. Armed with over 25 years of this expertise, the Airstrait™ uses precisely angled high-pressure blades of air to both simultaneously dry and straight style your hair. A Dyson Hyperdymium motor spins up to 106,000 rpm, propelling 11.9 litres of air through the machine per second. This generates air pressure powerful enough to straighten hair as it dries. The directional airflow aligns the hair strands for a smooth and shiny finish without the need for extreme heat, and results in up to 60% less damage* and colour fade.
Say Hello to the Dyson Airstrait™ - First Impressions
As with any Dyson product, the Airstrait™ straightener is easy to use right out of the box. A few essential buttons and a handy LCD screen for airflow and temperature details make it user-friendly from the get-go. Also included is a small guide, but if you are anything like us, you will want to plug it in and try it right away.
Design-wise, the Dyson Airstrait™ presents itself like any hair straightener, just better looking - like all of their other products! There is a chunky PRCD plug which stands out as different but is essential for the straightener’s powerful air-drying technology for wet-to-dry use.
How to Use the Dyson Airstrait™
Start with towel-dried hair and a locked Airstrait™. We love the handy feature where you can close the arms on the machine to lightly air dry your roots before styling. This also helps to amp up some volume and avoid that flat, post-ironing look. Don’t be surprised that your machine starts with a self-cleaning mode. This runs for a few seconds, every time the straightener is switched on - how futuristic is that?
Next choose your styling temperature, between 80°, 110° and 140°C to take your hair from its wet state to a sleek, finished style. You can also refresh dry hair, and style at 120° and 140°C using the Boost Mode.
Don’t worry if you forgot to turn off your straightener in between your styling sessions! After three seconds of inactivity, your machine automatically pauses, and only needs a nudge to wake up and get going again.
The robust and directional air drying method uses lower temperatures and resets the bonds of your hair, to keep its structure intact. With every swipe of the straightener - and we needed only one per section - you can look forward to shinier and smoothened hair.
We also recommend starting in the Wet-to-Dry mode for damp hair, then switching to Dry mode with the Boost setting for that extra smooth look.
Finally, switch to Cool Shot at the end to seal your newly styled hair.
How Convenient is it Really?
Now the idea of a wet-to-dry straightener seems exciting, but with that no damage or hot plate tagline, the Dyson Airstrait™ begins to sound like your new bestie. Is it really worth buying another hair gadget for your home use? Turns out, this might be the hair innovation of the year!
Although Dyson claims the Airstrait™ takes you from wet to dry in 15 minutes**, in our case of thin, chemically-treated long hair, the process took all of 8 minutes.
We think that warrants a repeat - just 8 minutes from towel-dried hair to shiny sleekness. That is at least 50% less time than we take for a half-happy, hair styling job at home!
It does have a bit of a learning curve. Unlike traditional irons, where the direction of the product(up or down) makes no difference, here it was about constantly remembering air direction so our hard work wasn’t, quite literally blown away.
Once you have your favourite settings in place, you will find the Airstrait™ easy to use and quite convenient for touch-ups on dry hair too. Think of the process as a no-damage hair salon blow-dry, achievable at home!
Speaking of, the look isn’t quite poker-straight either. We absolutely love how the Airstrait™ brings in salon-style hair without leaving behind a no-volume flat head. You can also create J-Curls, Volume and Fringe Lifts with this tool.
What About the $799 Price Tag?
With a solid $799 price tag, the Dyson Airstrait™ might not be for everyone but hold that thought. If you look at the per-use cost, it is easy to realise that the Airstrait™ is worthy of its investment. Not only does it leave hair looking healthier, shinier and almost like a salon blow-out, but it also makes the styling last all day. Don’t forget the drama it takes away from any early morning styling, reducing the amount of time from wet to dry by up to 25%.
But a machine is only as good as it is on your hair. For that reason, we highly recommend heading to one of Dyson’s stores to experience the wonders of the Dyson Airstrait™ first hand.
For us, the Dyson Airstrait™ straightener is as convenient as it is intuitive. It has all the makings of a great gift for mums, besties, and time-poor spouses.
As for styling, it gives noobs(us) the chance at salon-worthy hair and combats Singapore’s humidity effectively and throughout the day.
*When used in wet-to-dry mode.
**Time vs. existing routine. Based on the responses of 250 US Airstrait owners after min. 30 days of use, surveyed by Dyson in August 2023. Actual time saved may vary depending on the individual’s hair and styling routine.
