Hands up if you miss clothing brands in Singapore that take fashion, the weather and a great price point into account. We knew it was love-at-first-wear when we tried on Jo Kilda’s signature jumpsuit amongst the array of gorgeous silk and lace that she sells at her store on Scotts Road. Elegant and stylish, just like her brand; we spoke to Jyoti Singh, the owner and designer of Jo Kilda and found out more about her beautiful range.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where you grew up and how you made your way to the little red dot?
Much like a lot of you, I have had quite a bit of travel as an expat wife! My husband and I first moved to Singapore in 2001 with his banking career. We had our daughter in Singapore in 2002, then moved to London in 2004 only to move back to Singapore again in 2006! I did my Business Degree and had our son in 2006 but it was time for a move again and we headed to Melbourne in 2011 where I studied Fashion. Fortunately, my husband’s company moved us back to Singapore in 2015 and that’s when I decided to open my own store. Jo Kilda was officially launched at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia 2016.This little red dot seemed to keep pulling me back and it felt right to start Jo Kilda here.
Tell us about your brand. The name Jo Kilda, how did that come about?
Jo comes from my name and Kilda originated from the St Kilda Road in Melbourne where we spent four beautiful years. Our apartment was overlooking the beautiful Fawkner Park and St Kilda Road. Inspired by the hustle and bustle of the park and its surroundings, I decided to name by brand after it. Trendy and chic. Elegantly and stylishly fashionable. Hence Jo Kilda!
What are the key influences for collections at your brand.
This is affordable luxury. Jo Kilda designs are stylish, smart, elegant and sophisticated combined with exclusive selection of fabric and colour, either in silk or lace. I take inspiration from daily life and the wonderful women I meet to make gorgeous, affordable luxury for them.
Your firm personal favourite out of all the pieces you have designed.
It has to be the Kilda jumpsuit. Suits all body types, elegantly sexy and chic - comes in black & white. The jumpsuit has been worn by Andrea Decruz (actress, model, TV host), Su Shan Tan (Head of DBS Consumer & Wealth Management) , Sabrina Tan ( Founder of Skin Inc) and Hanli Hoefer (Famous Blogger, Model and VJ at MTV Asia). All these ladies rocked the Kilda jumpsuit.
We know your pieces are fashionable yet very wearable and comfortable too. What makes your brand different from the others?
What makes Jo Kilda different from others alongside the comfort and wearability is its price point. Jo Kilda is after all affordable luxury. My brand also thrives on its personalized customer service. I take time with and love styling my clients according to their body type and comfort level.
Where can I buy one of your signature pieces?
You can find all our styles at Jo Kilda Boutique located at Scotts Square level 3, No.6 Scotts Road.
What do you enjoy in your free time?
My free time is mostly with my kids and husband. I do tend to dabble on the drawing pad when inspiration strikes too! I also enjoy taking part in different charities. I very recently donated by signature red evening gown to the Debra Foundation for their live auction.
