Our favorite whisky bar and shop celebrated a momentous milestone – their 1st Anniversary – on the 2nd of September at their bar in CHIJMES.
Known to specialise in single cask and small batch independent bottlings as well as official bottlings from smaller distilleries, it was definitely a night to remember as the bar showcased four of the latest additions to The Single Cask range.
These four exceptional whiskies range from 14 to 27 years old and provide some rather interesting representations of the Speyside and Highland styles.
Brendan Pillai of The Single Cask walked us through the tasting notes of this new stellar range.
The Single Cask Glentauchers 2002 14 Years Old
This 14-year-old Speyside expression is reminiscent of an IPA at first nose with fruity and malty notes. On the palate, the malty note is more prominent accompanied with spices of black pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. All-in-all, it is somewhat a well-balanced dram.
If you have an affinity towards whiskies with a malty and warming feel, this expression of Glentauchers will not disappoint.
The Single Cask Glen Keith 1995 20 Years Old
A rather interesting expression that exhibits a combination of sweet, malty, herbal, spicy and fruity notes, this whisky is made to excite the palate. The expression first entices you with its scent of vanilla infused sugar and peaches with hints of cinnamon and oak. As you sip, your palate is inundated with herbal notes of sage and basil before malty barley brings things to a close with a slightly oily mouthfeel and a drying edge.
If you are looking for an unusual and yet complex nosing and tasting experience, theGlen Keith will provide both in spades..
The Single Cask Miltonduff 1995 21 Years Old
The Miltonduff is a great representation of a bourbon-matured whisky. It is a rich, sweet and rather smooth expression that exudes vanilla and oaky notes with a good amount of cinnamon. Tropical fruit notes playfully intertwine with the vanilla notes with hints of black pepper providing you with a complex yet warm and comforting dram.
If you are looking to try a great representation from a vastly underrated distillery, this is the expression to go for.
The Single Cask Invergordon 1988 27 Years Old
The stand out of the night - the Invergordon is an anomaly among the 7 existing grain whisky distilleries as it is the only Highland grain whisky amongst typically Lowland grain whiskies.
Grain whiskies are commonly known for a slightly pronounced alcoholic tone. This Invergordon expression presents a generous helping of wheat notes and a sweet surprise of ripe bananas fleeting through the palate accompanied with cinnamon and vanilla notes. As it mellows out, cognac-esque notes develope, providing an added level of complexity.
If grain whiskies do not seem appealing to you, we would suggest that you give this expression a try. It just might change your perception!
The festivities kicked off at 5 p.m. time and carried on well into the early hours of the morning and patrons of the bar were treated to a free flow of the 4 new whiskies and a selection of cocktails. The bar also surprised patrons by extending their First Anniversary Sale, which was originally on the 1st of September, to the following day as a gesture of thanks for their continued support.
The Single Cask also announced the winner of their “Win A Year's Supply Of Whisky” competition at 9 p.m. on the night and Mr Nigel Ng was the lucky patron who walked away with the grand prize of a year's supply of whisky.
Overall, it was a night filled with good fun, great drinks and exceptional memories and The Single Cask would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation to all patrons who joined them to celebrate such a momentous occasion.
