Thanks to the advancement in technology and science we now enjoy more permanent and quick solutions to preserving our skin's quality.
We know how important it is to be in the loop with the latest in beauty and technology. Team Vanilla Luxury recently got in touch with Dr. Fin of Bio Aesthetic to give us more information about C02 lasers - a method of laser resurfacing that promises to reduce wrinkles and skin irregularities permanently in just a few sessions.
Vanilla Luxury: Please explain the science behind CO2 lasers.
Dr. Fin: CO2 or carbon dioxide lasers uses the laser action of carbon dioxide gas for cutting and coagulating skin lesions and blood vessels. This is conventionally used in hospitals during surgical procedures. Lasers allow for great precision and sterility for treating a wide variety of skin lesions compared to alternative treatments such as cryotherapy or electrocautery.
More recently, scanners have been attached to these lasers to allow for skin resurfacing. This uses microbeams of laser to vaporize columns in the epidermis layer of the skin allowing for an accelerated healing time and less complications compared to conventional ablative skin resurfacing while improving skin texture and reducing acne scars. At the same time, thermal heat from the procedure also stimulates collagen growth and skin tightening.
Vanilla Luxury: What are the main signs that my skin would benefit from a CO2 laser?
Dr. Fin: CO2 lasers treat a wide variety of dermatological conditions in the epidermal and dermal layer of the skin such as moles, warts and seborrheic keratosis by vaporizing these lesions.
Skin resurfacing with a CO2 laser remains the most effective treatment for wrinkles, photodamaged skin, acne scars and chicken pox scars by ablating the epidermal layer of the skin to stimulate new skin and collagen growth to improve skin texture and reduce unwanted features.
Vanilla Luxury: Is the CO2 laser safe for anyone?
Dr. Fin: Like all lasers, post care with daily SPF 30-50 sunblock and excessive sun avoidance is recommended to avoid hyperpigmentation post procedure.
As this procedure relies on the skin healing process, patients who are prone to keloid scarring should be cautious and consult a doctor to receive the appropriate treatment. Similarly for patients on isotretinoin medication or had recent deep skin resurfacing procedures.
Active acne, bacterial or viral infections should also be treated first before starting the procedure due to the risk of spreading the infection.
Vanilla Luxury: How often should I do a CO2 laser treatment?
Dr. Fin: Results from the procedure are progressive with more severe scarring or wrinkling requiring more sessions. Usually 4 to 5 sessions of the procedure at 4 to 6 weekly intervals is done giving time for the skin to heal and vascularize. After optimal cosmetic improvement is achieved, 3 monthly maintenance sessions is suggested.
Vanilla Luxury: How long is the healing process after the procedure?
Dr. Fin: Down time from the procedure is typically 3 to 5 days but may be up to a week in some instances depending on the intensity of the laser. During this time, the skin is red and raw and frequent moisturizing will help to reduce the down time.
This treatment can be augmented with chemical peels, HIFU, botox or fillers to achieve a more desired overall rejuvenated look.
